Eleonora Marsich

University of Trieste, Italy

Eleonora Marsich is since 2012 Assistant Professor in Applied medical sciences (MED50) at the Department of Medical, Surgical and Health Sciences of the University of Trieste. She graduated with honors in Biology at the University of Trieste (Italy) in 1996 and in 2000 she obtained the PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Trieste. Since 2000, she was Postdoctoral fellow at the University of Trieste (Italy) at the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Macromolecular Chemistry and at the Department of Life Sciences. She has been short-term visiting scientist at the Joslin Diabetes Center di Boston (USA) carrying out research activities concerning the encapsulation of the Langerhans islands for the treatment of diabetes.
From October 2015, she is cofounder and CEO of the company biopoLife Srl, a university start-up that aims at performing technological transfer from scientific and research level to industrial development and commercialization of new polymer-based biomaterials.
Her research interest focuses on the study of the correlation between structure, physical and chemical properties and biological functions of natural polymers (mainly polysaccharides) and their model systems, on the study of new technological, biotechnological and biomedical applications of natural and modified polymers for biomaterials design, and on the enzymatic synthesis of biologically active oligosaccharides. In particular, her main research is in the field of the polysaccharides alginates and chitosans. The multidisciplinary research laboratory where she coordinates the biological studies, is focused on various aspects of biomaterials science, from conception of novel solutions to lab-scale manufacturing and characterization of materials and devices for biomedical applications.
Dr. Marsich has authored 46 papers published in international peer-reviewed journals (number of citations = 945; H index=17 updated from Scopus 05/02/2017) and 4 book chapters. She is co-inventor in 5 international patents.
